This mid-18th century Ginger Jar was first made in China in the Tongzhi period from 1862 to1870 in the Qing Dynasty which was from about 1636 to about 1912 and the Ginger Jar is referred to as stoneware and is also called "Kangxi”. The Ginger Jar was used to hold ginger, which was used as a folk medicine. In addition, it may have been used with other things like tea, spices etc. it is believed that the Ginger Jar was first made in the mid-18th century. Their high-shoulders, rounded shapes, small mouths, and frog base are traits of the Ginger Jars and the basic coloring of the Ginger Jars is greenish-brownish-grayish color giving it, its rustic look with a semi to dull glaze finish. There is no maker mark to help identify or date the jar, which could indicate that it was made before 1880 for the main reason that country-of-origin marking laws were first enacted in the 1880s in various European countries. This was to distinguish imported goods from domestic goods and became mandatory in the United States in 1891. In the late half of the 19th century, these Ginger Jars were used as decoration. This Ginger Jar has four hand painted blue lines two around the top and two between the rounded shape and the frog base. There is one small fleabite at the top of the rim on the outside of the rim. Other than that, this Ginger Jar is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, necks, scratches, repairs, stains, wear-marks and has not been modified in any way. It is a very rear fine and very old most of the jars found today are made in the early 20th century.
